Dental Assistants are often cross-trained in the role of Office Manager or Practice Administrator. Due to the physical nature of the position, many DAs choose to transition full time to the front office. The DA to PA curriculum is designed for anyone who is being cross trained or considering making a move to the role of Practice Administrator.

Mr. Small is a nationally recognized speaker on risk management in the dental practice environment. He practices law in Michigan and spent the first 20 years of his law practice defending dentists in court in Michigan and other states. He is an insurance agent for OMSNIC and Fortress.

Topic Details: Withdrawing from care is usually a last resort. It can be one of the most difficult decisions dentists make because it involves legal and ethical considerations when patients put their own health at risk. The decision is especially difficult when non-compliance evolves over time to the degree a dentist is no longer willing or able to effectively treat or be responsible for the result. Avoiding abandonment claims by withdrawing properly is easier when the reasons are documented clearly and contemporaneously.

During this presentation, you will learn:

The Importance of documenting events of non-compliance, and when necessary, the end of the doctor-patient relationship.
How serial letters can be used to put patients on notice, create opportunities to comply and warn of complications and liability patients must accept if they don’t comply.
Informed refusal is one option but the ultimate consequence is withdrawal.
